Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is among the most common cancer in women and extremely rare in men. Mammograms can detect breast cancer early, possibly before it has spread.
Please consult a Doctor by the moment you feel a lump or nodule in the breast.
Overall survival is good (>90%) and improves with early stages of diagnosis.
With modern treatment even breast cancer that is spread to different organs outside breast can be controlled and long term survival can be achieved.
Symptoms
The most common symptom is painless and appears as a lump or nodule in the breast mostly for peri menopausal and post menopausal Women. It is in fact less common for premenopausal Women.
Nevertheless all breast lumps can be cancer unless proven otherwise. A consultation with your Doctor is necessary if the lump persists for a month (>3weeks).
Treatment
Basic investigations are mammography and ultrasound of the breast.
Core needle biopsy is the most common investigation for the confirmation of the diagnosis of cancer and planning the treatment.
Next step after diagnosis is the staging of the disease because individual stages have different protocols for treatment.
Treatment of breast cancer depends on the stage at diagnosis and most commonly is a combination of chemotherapy, breast surgery and radiation.
Hormone responsive breast cancer (70%~) need hormone treatment for at least 5years. Targeted medications for specific breast cancer is used in Her2receptor positive patient.
